He was the one who carried the eggs. Ask any seahorse: the fathers do the bearing, the birthing, the whole tender ordeal. This one gave everything he had to the next generation and asked for nothing in return but a decent spot on your wall.

So here he is — opened up, pinned back, still half-wrapped in his own gauze. Every ribbon-rosette organ and mint chenille coil sits exactly where the good lord and a hot glue gun intended, with a single red heart holding the center like it hasn’t quite gotten the news.

Mounted on a  squoval plaque in floral ticking stripe, edged in lavender pom-pom and pink rickrack, and scattered with iridescent pearls. The incision is held open with crystal-headed pins, because a specimen worth keeping is a specimen worth doing properly.
